Therapy and Assessment Services

Therapy Services:

I use a range of different therapeutic approaches and supports, based on client needs/best practice, including:

Emotion-Focused Family Therapy: an approach grounded in the healing power of connection with others. An overarching aim of this model is to increase the role of the family in the recovery of member(s) experiencing mental health challenges.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR is an evidence based therapy used to treat a wide range of presenting concerns, such as trauma, stress, anxiety, self-esteem, depression, panic attacks, and phobias. Please see below for a video explaining EMDR in more detail:

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Level One): Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a holistic therapy approach used in the treatment of attachment and trauma wounds. SP allows for a gentle exploration of how different experiences we have can impact our relationship to self, others, and the world, using the body’s wisdom as main vehicle for discovery, learning, and healing.

Pat Ogden Founder of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy:

SP can enable you to discover and change habitual physical and psychological patterns that impede optimal functioning and well-being. SP is helpful in working with dysregulated activation and other effects of trauma, as well as the limiting belief systems of developmental issues. SP can help you cultivate your strengths, while providing enough challenge to stimulate growth, long lasting change, and well-being.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: focuses on increasing awareness of the connection between our thoughts, emotions, and actions to help increase overall mental health and wellness.

Theraplay Practices: a child-parent structured therapy approach that integrates play and connection to help increase attachment, self-esteem, trusting relationships, and positive engagement.

Synergetic Play Therapy: play therapy, the first language of children, is a developmentally appropriate and effective approach to help children express their challenges, process their experiences, and learn new skills. Synergetic Play Therapy, the approach I utilize, is a researched-informed model of play therapy that integrates the therapeutic power of play with nervous system regulation, interpersonal neurobiology, physics, attachment, mindfulness, and therapist authenticity. Please see below for three videos, outlining the play therapy process:

Gordon Neufeld’s Developmental Attachment Approach: this approach is rooted in developmental science and attachment theory. This model focuses on understanding the child-care giver relationship(s), child/adolescent behaviour, and outlines a range of approaches to help strengthen the child-caregiver bond(s) and growth. For more information, please see the following website: https://neufeldinstitute.org/about-us/our-approach/

Amen Clinic Trained: I am trained in Dr. Amen’s approach to assessment and treatment which incorporates biological, social, spiritual, and psychological factors throughout the therapeutic process. Please see the Amen Clinic Website for additional information: https://www.amenclinics.com/

Social Communication Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports (SCERTS): a research based model designed to support individuals and families in further developing skills in the core growth areas often identified in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. For more information, please see the following website: http://scerts.com/the-scerts-model/

Additional Approaches Used: Bibliotherapy, Creative Art Interventions, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Emotional Regulation Techniques, Family Systems Therapy, Internal Family Systems Strategies, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Person Centred Therapy, Sand Tray Techniques, Solution Focused Therapy, and Transactional Analysis.

Assessment Services:

1. How long is the assessment process? A full psychological or psychoeducational assessment typically takes between 12 to 14 hours.

2. How many appointments will this take? This varies based on the goal(s) of the assessment, tests required, and how the individual responds during testing (e.g., level of energy used, breaks needed).

*DID YOU KNOW?* The assessment process looks very different than therapy sessions. Please see below for a more detailed overview of what you can likely expect during an assessment:

15 minute initial consult (no charge): discuss what a tailored assessment will look like for you or your child, answer questions, and review the cost.

First appointment: I will meet with you or the parent/guardians (if a minor is being assessed) for a 1.5 hour intake meeting to obtain relevant background information. You may also be given rating scales to complete and return.

Second appointment (and sometimes more): You or your child will complete direct testing.

Break from appointments: I will review the results and prepare a comprehensive report outlining the assessment findings, with a clinical summary and empirically supported recommendations.

Final Appointment: I will meet with you to review the final report, recommendations, and answer any questions you may have.

Additional Information: Please note, that right now I am offering assessments under supervision. This means, that you (or your child) will get two Psychologists supporting the assessment process (e.g., reviewing test results, providing additional recommendations, adding further expertise) at no extra cost to yourself.
